Communicating astronomy - a personal experience

Uwe Reichert
Sterne und Weltraum

Research has not served its purpose until its results are communicated to the general public in an appropriate manner. This means you have to use the language the audience understands and to choose those media that will reach the people. So science communication is an art in itself. The magazine „Sterne und Weltraum“ was founded in 1962 as a common platform for professional and amateur astronomers to communicate with the public, and it has been an integral part of the German-speaking astronomical community since its inception. To keep going over several decades in a rapidly evolving world has been a constant challenge. The talk will highlight several factors that contributed to this success story.
