25 Years of Integral Field Spectroscopy in Potsdam

This talk will review a quarter of a century development of integral field spectroscopy in the optical, that has been pursued at the Leibniz-Institut für Astrophysik Potsdam (AIP). From a personal perspective, I will highlight the early stages of conceptual ideas at the beginning of the 1990’s, introduce the science case for PMAS, the Potsdam Multi Aperture Spectrophotometer, describe its development and scientific use, discuss the impact of networking in Europe and world-wide, and close with a picture of the current state-of-the art, with a brief outlook into the future.
